SKILLED MIGRATION - EMPLOYERS

When the local labour market can’t provide the skilled workers you need, there is another option.

Supported by the Department of Trade and Economic Development, Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast provides a service to local employers seeking to use migration as a way of filling skilled position vacancies with experienced and appropriately qualified staff.

Employer Sponsorship Options for Regional Business

There are two main options for direct employer sponsorship of skilled migrants in regional South Australia:-

  • Your business can sponsor a skilled worker from overseas for permanent residence using the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, commonly referred to as RSMS. This position must be fulltime, available for at least two years, be renumerated according to Australia Industrial requirements and meet labour market testing criteria.
  • If a shorter arrangement would suit, your business can sponsor a skilled worker from overseas for temporary residence for any period between 1 day and four years. Commonly referred to as Temporary (or 457) Business Sponsorship, this also requires a full time position to be offered. It must also offer a minimum salary according to current Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) guidelines, be a skilled occupation and in some cases, meet labour market testing criteria. Amongst other criteria, businesses must also be able to demonstrate their commitment to training and their industrial relation record as an employer.

In some circumstances exceptional appointments outside of these criteria can be accommodated. The RDALC provides information and basic assistance to help businesses access these programs. We are not however, migration agents and are unable to provide migration advice or act as agents for employers.

Finding the Right Skilled Migrant

DIAC are able to provide details of suitably qualified skilled migrants who have applied to migrate to Australia and who may be available to fill vacancies. This Skill Matching Database (SMD) can be searched by employers at www.immi.gov.au/skills. Full details for selected migrants can be obtained through the RDALC.
